Quick answer

  • A typical 4 kg neutered adult cat needs around 240 kcal a day.
  • That's about 3 pouches (85 g) a day, or around 60–65 g of dry food.
  • Feeding both? Halve each: about 1.5 pouches + 30 g of dry food.
  • Always check the kcal on your food's label and weigh your cat monthly.

How the calculator works

  1. Resting energy: we work out your cat's resting energy requirement (RER) with the vets' formula: 70 × body weight in kg0.75.
  2. Life stage: we multiply RER by a factor for life stage and activity, such as 1.2 for a neutered adult, 1.4 for an unneutered adult, 2 to 3 for kittens and 0.8 for weight loss.
  3. Your food: we divide the daily calories by the kcal in your pouch or per 100 g of dry food.

Every cat is different. Use the result as a starting point, then adjust by about 10% based on your cat's weight and body shape over the next 2 to 4 weeks.

How many pouches of cat food a day?

Small adult (3 kg)

About 2.5 pouches a day, split into 2 to 3 meals.

Average adult (4–4.5 kg)

About 3 to 3.5 pouches a day: the most common answer for UK house cats.

Large adult (5–6 kg)

About 3.5 to 4.5 pouches a day, for large breeds like Maine Coons and Norwegian Forest Cats.

Kitten (4–12 months)

About 2.5 to 4 kitten pouches a day as they grow, split into 3 or 4 meals.

Pouches vs sachets vs trays

"Pouches" and "sachets" usually mean the same thing in the UK: an 85 g or 100 g pack of wet food. Trays and tins vary from 85 g to 400 g. Calorie content can range from about 60 to more than 100 kcal per 85 g, so two brands can give very different results. Look for the "metabolisable energy" or kcal figure on the pack.

How much to feed a kitten

Kitten's ageMeals a dayTips
8–12 weeks4–6Kitten food only; small, frequent meals
3–6 months3–4Growth is fastest; let them eat a little more if lean
6–12 months3Reduce portions by about a quarter after neutering
12 months+2–3Switch gradually to adult food

Kittens should always eat a complete kitten food. Large and slow-maturing breeds can stay on kitten food a little longer; ask your vet. See when a kitten becomes a cat.

How much dry food to feed a cat

Dry food is calorie-dense, so small changes make a big difference: an extra 10 g a day can add roughly 40 kcal, which is about a sixth of a 4 kg cat's daily needs. Always weigh dry food on kitchen scales rather than using a scoop or cup. Free feeding (leaving a full bowl out) is a major cause of weight gain in indoor cats. If your cat likes to graze, measure the day's portion each morning and put it in a puzzle feeder.

Mixed feeding: wet and dry

Many UK owners feed one or two pouches plus some dry food. To get it right:

  • Work out total daily calories with the calculator.
  • Choose the split you want (for example, 50% wet and 50% dry).
  • Feed the matching pouches and grams, and don't add extra on top.

Wet food provides more water, which helps cats with urinary problems, kidney disease or constipation. See our guides to renal diets for cats and constipation in cats.

Adjusting for your cat's lifestyle

Neutered cats

Need around 25% fewer calories. Reduce portions after the operation; see cat neutering.

Indoor cats

Usually less active. Choose the "indoor and lazy" option and encourage play.

Senior cats

Some lose weight with age and may need more food. Sudden weight loss needs a vet check.

Pregnant and nursing cats

Need far more food, up to 2 to 3 times normal when feeding kittens. See cat pregnancy.

Treats and extras

Treats should make up no more than 10% of daily calories, about 20 to 25 kcal for an average cat. Count dental treats, cat milk and human food. Even small extras, such as a teaspoon of tuna or a lick of ice cream, add up. Check which foods are safe in our guides on pork and pasta, and never feed dog food as a regular diet, as it lacks taurine.

Signs you're feeding too much or too little

OverfeedingUnderfeeding
Ribs hard to feelRibs, spine or hip bones visible
No visible waist; sagging bellyConstant hunger and begging
Weight gain on monthly weigh-insWeight loss on monthly weigh-ins
Less active, struggles to groomDull coat or low energy

Never put an overweight cat on a crash diet. Cats that stop eating or lose weight too quickly can develop fatty liver disease (hepatic lipidosis), which can be fatal. Aim for 1 to 2% weight loss per week with your vet's help.

FAQs

How many pouches should I feed my cat a day?

Most adult cats eat 3 to 4 pouches (85 g) of wet food a day if they eat only wet food. A 4 kg neutered cat typically needs about 3 pouches, and a 5 kg cat about 3.5 to 4, depending on the food's calories. If you also feed dry food, reduce the pouches.

How many sachets of cat food a day for a kitten?

Kittens need more calories per kilo than adults. A 2 kg kitten aged 4 to 12 months needs about 235 kcal a day, around 3 sachets of kitten food, split into 3 or 4 meals. Younger kittens need even more frequent meals.

How much dry food should a cat eat a day?

An average 4 kg adult cat eating only dry food needs around 55 to 70 g a day, depending on the food's calorie content. Check the kcal per 100 g on the bag and use our calculator for an exact amount.

Is it OK to feed a cat wet and dry food?

Yes, mixed feeding is common and fine for most cats. Just reduce each type so the total calories stay right. Wet food adds moisture, which helps cats prone to urinary or kidney problems.

How often should I feed my cat?

Adult cats do well on 2 to 4 small meals a day. Kittens need 3 to 4 meals a day, and young kittens under 4 months may need 4 to 6. Puzzle feeders can spread dry food throughout the day.

How do I know if I'm feeding my cat enough?

Weigh your cat monthly and check body condition. You should be able to feel the ribs easily without seeing them, and see a waist from above. If your cat is gaining or losing weight, adjust portions by about 10%.
